Lancashire’s young sailors recently celebrated individual and team success in the National Schools Sailing Championship, competing against 19 other counties.

For the second time in three years, Lancashire won the blue ribbon Mount Haes Trophy event, where teams race identical Topper Xenon boats.

With two Lancashire crews in the final, Alison Grennan (18) and Leah Beckford (16), from Delph Sailing Club, became the first all female crew to win this prestigious trophy.

The 25-strong team from across Lancashire took third place overall, building on the team success in the Mount Haes event, Jack Hopkins’ (also from Delph) earnt victory in the Laser Radial class closely followed by a string of other impressive results across the fleets.

County Councillor Jenny Mein, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “It is inspiring to see our young people achieving so much success in such a demanding sport.  The Lancashire School Sailing Association does tremendous work in providing opportunities for young people from all backgrounds to enjoy sailing.”

Founded in 1966, Lancashire School Sailing Association "'promotes water based activities for young people in Lancashire" including Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen. It operates from its main sailing bases at Fishmoor (near Blackburn), Spade Mill (near Longridge) and Delph Sailing Club.
